The Significance of Birmingham Hill & The Battle of Brandywine 9/11/1777
Birmingham Hill Armory home office sits on the hollowed grounds of the Revolutionary War engagement the Battle of Brandywine and in the immediate vicinity of pivotal points of the battle, Birmingham Hill & the Birmingham Meeting House.
The September 11, 1777 Battle of Brandywine was the largest single day battle engagement between Continental and British forces in the American Revolution. Led by Continental Army General George Washington and British General Sir William Howe, 30,000 soldiers squared off for 11 hours over an area covering 10 square miles as part of General Howe’s push to claim Philadelphia.
While the battle in it’s entirety lasted over 11 hours, between 4pm and 7:30pm, British forces launched their main attack on Birmingham Hill and the Birmingham Meeting House where surprised and over matched American forces were able to repel several infantry charges up the hill in a valiant effort to protect General Washington’s flank.
Despite the fierceness of the American forces, the British won the battle and the ensuing fight for Philadelphia.
This marked a major turning point in the war as the loss convinced France the Americans were resilient and worthy of support, turning the American Revolution into a global conflict and the eventual downfall of British tyranny.
