Echoes of Brandywine · September 11, 1777
The significance of Birmingham Hill
Our home office sits on the hallowed grounds of the Battle of Brandywine, in the immediate vicinity of two pivotal points of the battle: Birmingham Hill and the Birmingham Meeting House.
The September 11, 1777 Battle of Brandywine was the largest single-day engagement between Continental and British forces in the American Revolution. Led by General George Washington and General Sir William Howe, 30,000 soldiers squared off for 11 hours across 10 square miles as part of Howe’s push to claim Philadelphia.
Between 4pm and 7:30pm, British forces launched their main attack on Birmingham Hill and the Meeting House, where outmatched American forces repelled several infantry charges up the hill to protect Washington’s flank.
The British won the battle and the fight for Philadelphia, but the resilience shown that day helped convince France the Americans were worthy of support, turning the Revolution into a global conflict and the eventual downfall of British tyranny.
