Introduced right around the start of World War I, the Remington Model 16 is a fascinating and highly collectible piece of early American rimfire history. Designed by C.H. Barnes, it holds the distinction of being Remington’s very first autoloading .22 caliber rifle. Boasting sleek, elegant lines, a clever takedown mechanism, and a tubular magazine cleverly hidden within the buttstock, the Model 16 was a premium sporting rifle of its day.

What makes this rifle incredibly unique—and a highly sought-after piece for dedicated Remington collectors—is its chambering. To prevent shooters from fouling the early semi-auto action with dirty black-powder .22 ammunition, Remington designed a proprietary smokeless cartridge exclusively for this rifle: the .22 Remington Autoloading (or .22 Rem Auto). Standard .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle cartridges will not chamber or fire in this gun. Because this ammunition is obsolete and has not been manufactured in decades, finding original rounds is extremely difficult.

• Finish: Retains a very strong percentage of its original factory bluing. There is standard, age-appropriate finish thinning and silvering around the high edges of the receiver, the muzzle, and the takedown collar. The original Remington UMC barrel stampings and patent dates remain crisp and legible. There is no deep pitting or active rust.

• Bore: Good to Very Good. The bore displays visible, intact rifling. Given the age and the ammunition of the era, some light, expected frosting may be present, but it remains highly respectable.

• Wood: The walnut buttstock and Schnabel forend are in great structural condition. There are normal, scattered field dings, pressure dents, and handling marks acquired over the last 100+ years, but no major structural splits. The wood-to-metal fit remains tight.

• Mechanics: The takedown mechanism twists and locks up securely without excessive wobble. The charging handle retracts smoothly, the bolt cycles properly, and the internal magazine follower spring provides good tension.
